A blocked drain in Bristol is usually a toilet that will not clear, a shower that fills with grey water, or a yard gully that spills onto the flags. Tell us the problem and the postcode. We pass that to local drainage companies that cover it.

Common signs of a blocked drain in Bristol

  • The toilet sits high after a flush, or does not go down at all
  • Grey water comes up through the shower when the washing machine empties
  • The yard gully bubbles
  • More than one sink in the house goes slow at the same time
  • A sewage smell in a cellar, a basement, a back yard or a downstairs room

Once the pipe is restricted it almost never frees itself. Wet wipes, fat from the kitchen and silt sit on top of whatever is already stuck.

If only the upstairs bathroom is slow and downstairs still runs, the restriction is usually on your pipework. If several houses on the terrace back up at once, or your downstairs toilet only backs up when it rains, that is a different job. Those two are common in Bristol and they are not the same pipe.

What people typically pay in Bristol (2026)

Bristol firms often advertise no call-out fee on a straightforward daytime job. The bill moves when a van cannot get to the cover: Vale Street and the rest of Totterdown, a Clifton basement, a buried drain cover under flags, a long shared run behind Easton terraces. Out of hours is the other jump.

These are typical ranges, not a quote. See drain unblocking cost and CCTV drain survey cost for the national picture.

Combined sewers in Clifton and Bedminster

A lot of older Bristol still uses combined sewers: foul waste and rainwater in the same pipe. Bristol City Council’s Strategic Flood Risk Assessment says that is typical in older parts of the city, including Clifton and Bedminster.

In heavy rain the pipe fills. The first place you see it is the downstairs toilet, the yard gully, or a Clifton basement.

That is not a blocked U-bend. Rodding the toilet will not fix a combined sewer that is already full of rain. If the same thing is happening next door, report it to Wessex Water. They clear a blockage on their network at no charge. If it is only your house, a contractor still has to see whether your private drain is restricted as well.

Wessex Water has monitors on all 1,295 storm overflows in its region and publishes how often they run. Combined sewers and storm overflows are the same system under load. They are not your private gully.

Shared drains behind Easton, Bedminster and Southville terraces

Victorian terraces in Easton, Bedminster and Southville often share a rear lane and a drain. One restriction can show in more than one house on the same morning.

From 1 October 2011, most private sewers and lateral drains in England transferred to the water company. The householder’s drain is usually the pipe that serves only that house, up to the boundary or up to the join with shared pipework, whichever is closer. Shared pipes that serve two or more houses are normally Wessex Water. Their guide to sewer pipe responsibility sets out where the line falls.

A CCTV survey is how you stop a row of neighbours arguing about whose wet wipes they are.

Hills, Vale Street, and the house at the bottom

Vale Street in Totterdown is a residential road with about a 22-degree gradient. It is widely cited as England’s steepest residential street. Water follows the fall. The house at the bottom of a Totterdown, Redland or Clifton terrace sees the overflow first.

Access is part of the bill. Rods, a jetting hose and a van all have to reach the drain cover, and a steep terrace makes that harder than a flat rear yard. Steep flags, a buried drain cover under the yard, or a shared rear lane with no vehicle access is what turns a daytime unblock into a longer job.

Basements in Clifton and Hotwells

Clifton and Hotwells have basements. When a combined sewer surcharges, that is where the water sits: a downstairs toilet, a cellar gully, or the floor itself.

If waste is coming into the house, that is an emergency call rather than something to watch and hope. Wessex Water’s sewer flooding number is 0345 600 4 600. If the flooding is on their network they attend. If the restriction is on your private pipework, you need a drainage contractor. Their own test, on their blocked drains page: if downstairs still runs and upstairs does not, it is usually your pipework. If the neighbours have the same problem, it is usually theirs.

Student houses around Clifton campus

The University of Bristol’s main teaching is in Clifton. Halls and houses sit on St Michael’s Hill and St Michael’s Park. Private student houses are thick in Clifton, Cotham, Kingsdown, Redland and St Pauls.

Those houses share stacks and often share a drain. Wet wipes and kitchen fat from several households go into one pipe. The landlord is responsible for keeping the drains in repair on an ordinary tenancy. That is in section 11 of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985: the landlord must keep in repair the structure and exterior, including drains, gutters and external pipes.

A tenant can still send the quote form if the landlord has said they can. Say it is a shared house if more than one household uses the stack.

Tree roots in clay drain pipes in Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Westbury-on-Trym

Henleaze, Stoke Bishop, Westbury-on-Trym and Sneyd Park are leafier. Older runs there are often clay drain pipes with joints. Roots find the joints. The drain runs slow for months, then backs up after rain or after the leaves come down.

A rod can punch a hole through roots. The roots grow back. Jetting and a CCTV survey show whether the pipe is cracked or displaced. Repair or lining is a different job from a one-off unblock.

Who looks after the drain in Bristol

  • Your private drain. Pipes and fittings inside the house, and the external pipe that serves only your house up to the boundary or the shared join. You or the landlord pay a contractor
  • Wessex Water. The public sewer beyond the boundary, and most shared pipes serving two or more properties. Blockage on that network: report it to Wessex. They clear it, at no charge for that clearance. Call 0345 600 4 600 for sewer flooding
  • Bristol City Council. Road gullies and highway drains. A blocked, damaged or missing drain cover in the street is a street issue. If a drain cover is missing or could be dangerous: 0117 922 2100 (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 6pm) or 0117 922 2050 at other times

The council gully in the road is not the same as the drain that takes your toilet. Keys dropped down a highway gully are recovered by Bristol Waste, and they charge for it. That is not a household blocked drain.

Why Bedminster still takes water when the Malago rises

Bedminster and Ashton flooded badly in July 1968. The Malago Interceptors were built after that flood. They take the River Malago underground through Southville to the New Cut. The Northern Stormwater Interceptor, opened in 1962 and owned by the council, takes storm water away from the north and east of the city. It ran at full capacity in 1968 and protected Broadmead.

Those tunnels do not unblock your kitchen. They are why the city is not the 1968 flood every time it rains. Household drains still fail on clay joints, shared rear runs, fat, wet wipes, and combined sewers that fill in Clifton and Bedminster.

Easton Arch, where Easton Road meets Whitehall Road under the railway, is one of the places that still floods in heavy rain. That is a road and a gully problem as much as a house drain. Report standing water on the highway to the council. Report sewage in the house to Wessex or a contractor, depending on whose pipe it is.

FAQs in Bristol

The downstairs toilet only backs up when it rains. What is that?

Often the combined sewer in Clifton or Bedminster taking rain and foul together. If the neighbours have it too, ring Wessex Water. If it is only your basement or your gully, a contractor still needs to see the private section.

Is the flooding at Easton Arch my blocked drain?

Usually not. That is a highway low point under the railway. Report it to Bristol City Council as a street drain or flooding issue. Sewage inside the house is still Wessex or a contractor.

The blockage is in the rear lane behind our Easton terrace. Who pays?

If the pipe serves more than one house and it transferred in 2011, that is normally Wessex Water. If the restriction is still on the private drain inside your boundary, it is you or the landlord. CCTV is what settles it.

I live on a steep Totterdown street. Will someone come?

Yes. Say so on the form. Access and a buried drain cover change the price, not whether the job exists.

Waste is in the Clifton basement. Who do I ring first?

If sewage is entering the building, call Wessex Water on 0345 600 4 600 as well as a contractor. If it is their sewer they should attend. Do not wait to see if it goes down.

I rent in Cotham. Do I pay?

On a standard tenancy the landlord must keep the drains in repair. Send them the problem. You can use the quote form if they have said you can.

Is a CCTV survey worth it when buying in Henleaze or a Bedminster terrace?

Yes on older clay drain pipes, shared rear drains, and any house with a basement. A standard building survey does not film the pipe.

Do I need to be at the property?

Yes in most cases, so the drain covers can be lifted. In a shared rear lane, be able to point out which gully is yours.

How quickly can someone attend?

Same-day and next-day cover exists across the BS postcodes. Emergency rates apply out of hours. If waste is coming into the house, do not wait on a quote form alone. Call as well.
