A blocked toilet is the most common household drainage problem in the country. The water rises instead of clearing, drains away slowly, or the bowl sits high after a flush.

Most cases are simple and close to the pan. Some are the first sign of something further down the pipe, and telling those two apart takes about a minute.

The one minute test

Before you touch anything, check the rest of the house. It decides who you need and what it costs.

  • Only the toilet is affected, and every sink, bath and shower runs normally. The blockage is almost certainly close to the pan, and it is often a job you can do yourself
  • The toilet plus a bath, shower or sink is slow, or water rises in the shower when the washing machine empties. The problem is further down the shared run, and rods or a jetting hose are needed
  • Neighbours have the same problem at the same time, or the outside gully is full. That points at the shared drain or the public sewer

That last one matters most, because it can mean the job costs you nothing. Since 1 October 2011 most shared private sewers in England and Wales transferred to the water companies, and they clear blockages on their own network at no charge. Ring them before you pay anyone.

Typical UK costs (2026)

Job type Typical price Notes
Simple toilet unblock £75 – £150 Plunger or basic tools
Rodding or auger £100 – £200 Stubborn pan or short run
Jetting needed £150 – £250 Blockage further down
Emergency or out of hours £180 – £350+ Evenings, weekends
Camera survey if it keeps returning £150 – £350 When the cause is unclear

Most straightforward jobs land around £80 to £150. Fuller price detail is on drain unblocking cost.

What actually causes it

Wet wipes are the biggest single cause across the country, and the water companies publish the numbers.

  • Thames Water removes 3.8 billion wet wipes a year at a cost of around £18 million, and names wipes as its number one cause of blockages
  • Yorkshire Water dealt with 25,976 blockages in 2022, of which 11,946, about 46%, were caused by wet wipes
  • Scottish Water clears around 35,000 blockages a year at about £10 million, largely from wipes

The rest of the list is familiar:

  • Too much paper in one flush
  • Cotton buds, sanitary products and nappies
  • Toys and other objects, which is usually a household with small children
  • Scale building up inside older pipes
  • A restriction in the soil stack or the main run
  • A shared drain serving several houses

The industry advice comes down to three things. Only flush the three Ps: pee, poo and paper.

What to try before you ring anybody

If only the toilet is affected, these are worth ten minutes.

  • Stop flushing. Every extra flush adds water to a bowl that is already not emptying, and overflow is a far worse problem than a blockage
  • Use a proper toilet plunger, the flanged sort rather than the flat cup one made for sinks. Push slowly, pull sharply
  • Hot water and washing up liquid. Hot, not boiling, because boiling water can crack a ceramic pan. Give it fifteen minutes to soften paper
  • Stop if nothing moves. Repeating the same thing harder rarely helps

Go easy on chemical drain products. They do little to fat and nothing to wipes or roots, and a pan full of caustic liquid is genuinely unpleasant for whoever has to work on it later. If you have used any, say so when you book.

When to stop and call somebody

  • The water is near the rim, because overflow turns a cheap job into a cleanup
  • More than one fitting is affected
  • The blockage keeps returning after being cleared
  • There is a sewage smell indoors, in a cellar or in the garden
  • Waste is coming back up anywhere in the house
  • It is your only toilet and you need it working today

Plumber or drainage company

People often ring the wrong one and pay twice.

  • A plumber is right for a blockage in or immediately behind the pan, and for anything wrong with the cistern, the flush or the seal
  • A drainage company is right once the problem is in the main run outside, or if it needs jetting, rods or a camera

The test is the same as at the top of this page. Toilet alone means a plumber will usually do. Toilet plus other fittings means the run outside, and that is drainage work.

How long it takes

Most simple jobs take between half an hour and two hours once work starts. Longer if the drain cover is buried, access is awkward, or the blockage is well down the system.

The waiting is usually the arrival rather than the work. Same day and next day cover is normal across the country, with emergency rates outside working hours.

If it keeps happening

A toilet that blocks once is a blockage. A toilet that blocks every few weeks is a symptom.

  • Scale or a rough patch inside the pipe catching paper each time
  • A partial collapse or a dropped joint further down the run
  • Roots in a jointed clay pipe, which is common in older properties with trees nearby
  • A shared run where the real problem is somebody else’s habits

Repeated call-outs for the same stretch cost more over a year than one camera survey that finds the cause. See CCTV drain survey cost for what that involves.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to unblock a toilet in the UK?

Most simple jobs cost £75 to £150. Stubborn blockages needing jetting, and out of hours visits, cost more.

Could it cost me nothing?

If the blockage is on the public sewer, yes. Water companies clear those at no charge. Neighbours having the same problem at the same time is the strongest clue.

Can a blocked toilet clear itself?

A minor paper blockage sometimes eases. Anything involving wipes usually does not, and waiting increases the risk of overflow.

Should I keep flushing to push it through?

No. That is how a blockage becomes a flood.

Plumber or drainage company?

Toilet only and simple, a plumber is usually enough. Main drain, repeated blockages, or anything needing jetting or a camera, a drainage company.

Are flushable wipes really a problem?

Yes. They are the number one cause of blockages named by Thames Water, and Yorkshire Water put them behind 46% of theirs in 2022.

Should I use chemical cleaners?

They often fail on a real blockage and make the job messier for whoever attends. Tell the company if you have used any.

Is boiling water safe?

Use hot rather than boiling. Boiling water can crack a ceramic pan, which is a much bigger bill.

What if other drains are blocked too?

That usually means the shared or main drain rather than the toilet trap. Check whether neighbours are affected before you book anyone.
