A blocked drain in Newcastle usually shows up the same few ways, whether you are in a Tyneside flat in Heaton or a terrace in Byker. The water goes down slowly, or it stops going down at all. This page covers what tends to cause it here, who is responsible for the pipe, and how to get quotes from local drainage companies covering your postcode.
Common signs of a blocked drain in Newcastle
Most blockages give you warning before they overflow. Look for these:
- Slow sinks, baths or toilets. Water sits and drains away far more slowly than normal.
- Gurgling. You hear the toilet or a plughole bubbling when another appliance drains.
- A smell outside. A drain smell near a gully or manhole in the yard means waste is sitting in the pipe.
- Wastewater at an outside drain. If the gully in the yard or the manhole starts to fill, the blockage is downstream and needs clearing quickly.
- More than one appliance affected. If the sink and the toilet both back up, the blockage is in the shared pipe, not the fitting.
A single slow sink can often wait for a booked visit. A toilet that will not clear, or a drain overflowing outside, is worth treating as an emergency. In a flat where a neighbour shares the pipe, it needs sorting fast before it reaches their home too.
What people typically pay in Newcastle (2026)
Local drainage companies in Newcastle advertise from around £60 for a straightforward daytime unblocking of a single drain. A stubborn blockage that needs high pressure jetting costs more. An evening, weekend or genuine emergency call out costs more again. A camera survey to find a repeated problem is a separate job with its own price.
Prices move with the time of day, how deep the blockage is and how much digging is involved. The only figure that means anything is a quote for your own drain. For a fuller breakdown, see our guides to drain unblocking cost and CCTV drain survey cost.
Why summer downpours overwhelm Newcastle drains
On 28 June 2012 a slow moving thunderstorm dropped 51mm of rain on Newcastle, and 26mm of it fell in half an hour. The drains could not take water that fast. Around 377 streets flooded and 227 suffered damage to the road surface. More than 500 homes had water inside them and 54 businesses were hit. The Metro and main roads closed, crews rescued people from flooded streets in West Monkseaton by boat, and the day is still known locally as Thunder Thursday.
That was an extreme case. It still shows how a Newcastle drain behaves when it has to take more than it was built for. A pipe that is already half full of grease or roots copes with a normal day, then backs up the moment there is heavy rain. If your drain floods every time there is a downpour, the pipe is usually part blocked rather than simply undersized. A camera survey shows which.
Tyneside flats and shared back yard drains
Newcastle has thousands of Tyneside flats. This housing type was built across the city from the 1860s until the First World War and is common in Heaton, Jesmond and Gosforth. Each two storey terrace is split into a ground floor flat and an upper flat, with two separate front doors onto the street. At the back there is a small yard, often paired with the neighbour’s, and the waste from both flats usually runs into the same drain.
This matters when something blocks. The waste from the flat upstairs runs through the same pipe as yours, so a blockage affects both homes at once. A pipe that serves more than one property is usually the water company’s responsibility rather than yours. If your ground floor flat backs up when the flat above uses water, the problem is almost always in that shared run, and reporting it to the water company can save you paying for it.
Student and shared houses in Jesmond and Heaton
Jesmond and Heaton hold a lot of shared student housing, much of it in those same Tyneside flats and terraces. A full house of five or six people puts far more through a drain than a family home does, and it is harder to keep track of what goes down it. Wipes, cooking fat and the odd thing that should never be flushed build up faster.
If you rent one of these houses, the drains are the landlord’s to keep clear, so report a slow or blocked drain to them early. A blockage caught while it is still a slow drain is a simple job. Left until it overflows into a shared yard, it becomes an emergency that affects the house next door as well.
The Ouseburn, culverted under the city
The Ouseburn runs down from Callerton through Gosforth and Jesmond Dene, then disappears into a culvert built between 1907 and 1911. The culvert is a third of a mile long and 30 feet wide. The old valley above it was filled in with industrial waste so that houses and roads could be built on top, and a tidal barrage was added at the river mouth in 2009. Much of east Newcastle sits on that made up ground.
Ground that has been filled and built over tends to settle over the years. Old clay drains laid across it can crack or drop at the joints as it moves, which lets roots in and traps waste. That is one reason older properties near the Ouseburn valley get repeat blockages in the same spot. A camera survey finds the damaged section so the repair goes to the right place, instead of the whole run being dug up.
Wipes are behind most blockages in the North East
Northumbrian Water says flushed wipes cause more than 60% of sewer blockages in the North East. Wipes do not break down the way toilet paper does. They catch on a joint or a bend, then fat and grease build up on them until the pipe closes over. Kitchen fat poured down a sink does the same thing as it cools and sets.
The fix is the dull one that works. Put wipes in the bin, even the ones labelled flushable, and let fat cool and go in the bin too. It will not clear a blockage you already have. It does stop the next one.
Who looks after the drain in Newcastle
Three different bodies look after different pipes in Newcastle. Knowing which is which saves you paying for a job that is not yours.
- Your own drains. The pipes inside your boundary that serve only your home are yours to maintain. That includes gullies, downpipes and the underground pipe up to the boundary.
- Northumbrian Water. Shared pipes, and pipes beyond your boundary that run into the public sewer, transferred to Northumbrian Water in 2011. They aim to attend a reported sewer blockage within four hours, on 0800 328 7648.
- The council. A blocked gully or drain in the road is looked after by Newcastle City Council highways, on 0191 278 7878. Flooding from the Tyne and the Ouseburn is the Environment Agency’s.
If you are not sure whose pipe it is, a local drainage company can usually tell from where the water backs up. They will say if the blockage is really one for Northumbrian Water to clear for free.
Building over or near a sewer in Newcastle
If you are extending a Tyneside flat or a terrace and there is a public sewer within three metres of the work, Northumbrian Water has to give consent first. The rule protects the sewer and keeps it reachable if it ever needs work. It is worth checking before you build. A sewer found under a new extension is a far bigger problem than a form filled in beforehand.
FAQs in Newcastle
My ground floor flat keeps backing up. Is it my drain?
In a Tyneside flat the waste from both flats usually shares one pipe, so a blockage in that shared run affects the ground floor first. A pipe serving more than one home is normally Northumbrian Water’s, so it is worth reporting to them before you pay for a private clearance.
Who do I call for a drain flooding in the street?
A gully or drain in the road is the council’s, on 0191 278 7878. If a manhole in the street is overflowing with sewage, report it to Northumbrian Water on 0800 328 7648.
Why does my drain only flood in heavy rain?
A pipe that only overflows in a downpour is usually part blocked already. It copes on a dry day, then cannot take the extra water. A camera survey shows whether the pipe is blocked, cracked or holding water at a dropped joint.
Are flushable wipes safe for my drains?
No. Wipes labelled flushable still cause most blockages in the North East. Put them in the bin.
